Procession of Pope Pius IX
The painting depicts the historical event of Pope Pius IX “taking possession of Rome”, Pope Pius IV and his entourage are seen in a procession as they traverse the Roman Forum to arrive at the Coliseum. This ceremony is one of particular importance, the newly elected pope, immediately following the solemn coronation Mass, takes “possession” of the seat in the pontifical cathedral of St. John Latern, Mater et Caput, of all the churches of the city and by extension, the world.
Restoration work to be done includes removal of surface debris, assembly of frame and supports, varnish removal, correction and repair of cracks, application of protective varnish and photographic documentation.
